AbstractThis paper reports the preliminary findings of a science training research project carried out as part of a LBA-Ecology Project. It reports the experiment performed to assess the effect of image spatial resolution in identification and mapping of the various wetland ecosystems found in the Amazon river floodplain. A Landsat TM digital mosaic radiometrically rectified was resampled to 100m x 100m and 250m x 250m resolution to emulate the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) spatial resolution. Both data sets were then submitted to the same digital processing procedure as follows: a) application of the linear mixing algorithm to generate fraction images corresponding to soil, vegetation and shade; b) each fraction image was then submitted to image segmentation and region classification unsupervised algorithm. The results were statistically analyzed leading to the conclusion that the 250 m x 250 m spatial resolution mosaic did not allow the correct assessment of the area occupied by the floodplain habitats. Therefore the100m x 100m spatial resolution mosaic will be used to perform the same analysis for the entire Amazon River floodplain. Next steps of the research will focus on the use of current MODIS images whose improved radiometric and spectral resolution may compensate for the poorer spatial resolution.
